Letter from the Chairman

It is a great pleasure to announce the 5th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers – ProEXPLO 2007, that will take place in the city of Lima, Peru from May 22 to 25, 2007, organized every two years by The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers.
Since its inception in 1999, ProEXPLO has become one of the most important international events for explorationists and other specialists involved in the exploration, discovery and development of new mines.

The mining industry, although more technologically advanced than in the past, is at the present time facing new challenges that should be appropriately overcome in order to achieve its goals.  Those challenges include:

  • A significant growth of the worldwide metal demand particularly in China and India, that has expanded and diversified the mineral resources consumption.
  • An increased mining activity due to the rise in mineral prices that has fostered exploration for replacement of depleted mineral reserves.
  • A significant reduction of ore deposits that may be easily discovered by applying the traditional techniques of surface exploration.
  • An increasing hostile and challenging social environment in exploration and the development of new mines.
  • A decreasing number of mining-related professionals and students in economic geology.

The new version of ProEXPLO 2007 under the slogan “Exploration: Provider of Mineral Resources and Creator of Wealth”, will combine the geological sciences with the exploration and mining business.  Taking into account such objective, and in order to meet the information and updating needs of the explorationist, other mining-related professionals and students, the Organizing Committee of the Congress has arranged a wide variety of conferences and activities to be presented by important Peruvian and international guest speakers of the exploration  and mining industry and universities.

The technical sessions will include important topics related to the strategies and techniques of exploration, discovery and evaluation of ore deposits, placing particular emphasis on practical subjects that are not offered in the universities.  The sessions will also deal with the origin of ore deposits since it is closely related to the exploration and highlight the economic, financial and risk factors affecting the profitability of the mining projects.

The program of activities will consist of three forums: “Business Opportunities”, “Exploration, Social Responsibility and Environment” and “Mission of the Geological Services in the Ore Deposits Exploration”.  In addition, brief courses on current topics on geology in different types of ore deposits and on economics related to risk management in exploration will be offered; field visits to important world-class gold and copper deposits will take place and mining and exploration products and equipment will be exhibited.

I believe that development of these important topics will contribute to enhance the performance end efficiency of exploration geologists to reduce time and cost of new discoveries.

The Organizing Committee cordially invites exploration managers and geologists, mining company managers, financial analysts, academics and all people interested in creating well-being through success in exploration and good practices in mining to participate in the next “ProEXPLO 2007”.
