proEXPLO 2026 to Host Field Trip to Cajamarca to Study Porphyry and Epithermal Systems
The field trip will provide on-site analysis of one of the most important mining districts in the Andes, integrating geology, mineralization, and exploration models.
Lima, April 14, 2026.- As part of proEXPLO 2026, the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) will organize the third field trip titled “Exploring the Cajamarca Magmatic-Hydrothermal Province: From Porphyry Roots to High-Sulfidation Epithermal Systems,” to be held from May 7 to 12, 2026.
Over six days, participants will visit one of the most significant mining districts in the Andes, with stops at operations and projects such as Gold Fields, Tantahuatay Óxidos (Compañía Minera Coimolache / Buenaventura), La Zanja (Buenaventura), Antakori (Regulus Resources), and Yanacocha (Newmont).
The program includes mine visits, drill core review (Core Shack), and technical presentations by specialists, who will discuss the geological context, mineralization styles, and development status of each project.
The experience will provide an integrated understanding of the geological and metallogenic evolution of Cajamarca, as well as the relationship between porphyry systems and high-sulfidation epithermal deposits, key elements for exploration in the region.
Field-Based Learning
Throughout the trip, participants will analyze mineralization styles, hydrothermal alteration processes, and structural controls, integrating field observations with exploration models and specialized literature.
The activity will be led by Dr. José Tomás Ovalle, economic geologist and geochemist, founder of Vultur Geociencias, with extensive experience in applied studies for mining exploration in the Andes, and Dr. Adam C. Simon, Professor of Mineral Resources at the University of Michigan and a recognized international researcher with a distinguished track record in mineral resource exploration and processing.
Registration Open
The trip is aimed at exploration and mine geologists, students of geology and Earth sciences, as well as academics, researchers, and mining professionals.
The fee is USD 1,700 per participant (including VAT), and registration will remain open until April 22, 2026. The program includes internal transportation, accommodation, meals, and a certificate of participation.
Participants must be between 18 and 65 years of age, have occupational health and pension insurance (SCTR), and provide proof of good physical health through a medical examination (Annex 16A).
