proEXPLO 2025: Eight keynote speeches will be given on the future of copper, geometallurgy, orogenic gold and smart exploration.

With its interesting conference program and the exceptional quality of the invited speakers, proEXPLO is one of the main geological-mining meetings in Latin America.

Lima, February 25, 2025. Eight keynote speeches will be given as part of the 14th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers (proEXPLO 2025), organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).

The event will be held from May 5 to 7 at the Lima Convention Center. The event is expected to receive 3,000 participants, including professionals, students and people involved in the services segment from Peru, Latin America and the world.

The keynote speeches will be the following:

    • Orogenic gold: the truth and the science fiction, by Richard Goldfarb

    • Its role in the future supply of copper, by Joe Mazumdar

    • The importance of geometallurgy from exploration to remediation, by Regina Baumgartner

    • Hypogene high grades in porphyry copper systems, by Richard Sillitoe

    • Smart exploration? The use (and misuse) of technology and AI on the path to discovery, by Britt Bluemel

    • Billions and Billions: The value of deposit knowledge to the mining industry, by Shaun Barker.

    • Hydrothermal alteration, veins and mineralization in Early Halo and A-type copper porphyries, by Federico Cernuschi

    • IOCG, skarns and intrusions in the Coastal Cordillera: understanding the mineral system, by Fernando Tornos.

The lectures will be given in Spanish and will also have simultaneous interpretation.

Instructors

The lectures will be given by professionals and experts in the global mining sector invited by the IIMP such as Shaun Barker, director of the Mineral Deposit Research Unit of the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Columbia University in Vancouver, Canada.

Also, Federico Cernuschi is an independent consultant, specialized in geology and geochemistry of magmatic-hydrothermal processes, focusing on exploration and development of porphyry-type deposits, with studies at UDELAR, Uruguay and Oregon State University.

Regina Baumgartner is a geoscientist with extensive experience in greenfield exploration, advanced projects, brownfield and operations in Peru, Chile, Canada, Philippines and other parts of the world. She holds a Ph.D. and a Master's degree from the University of Geneva.

Richard Goldfarb has a B.S. in Geology from Bucknell University, M.S. in Hydrology from the University of Nevada - Mackay School of Mines, and Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Colorado. He has 36 years of experience as a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

High-level profiles

Richard Sillitoe received his PhD from the University of London in 1968. For five decades he has worked as an independent consultant for mining companies, international organizations and foreign governments. He has worked on mineral deposits and prospects in 100 countries and focuses on epithermal gold and porphyry copper environments.

Fernando Tornoses is Research Professor at the Geosciences Institute and Adjunct Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Lulea Technological University. He coordinates the ExMODE research group of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Spain.

For his part, Joe Mazumdar holds a master's degree in Geology and Mining from James Cook University and a master's degree in Mining Economics from the Colorado School of Mines. He is co-editor and analyst for Exploration Insights at Brent Cook. He worked as an exploration geologist for IAMGOLD, North Minerals and RTZ in South America, MIM Exploration in Queensland, Australia, and Noranda and others.

Finally, Britt Bluemel is Global Business Development Manager of the Mine Site Services Group for ALS Global. She has experience in geology, data science and technology intersection. She has been instrumental in driving growth and strategic direction in multinational companies.
